Presentation
A course on America's news media covering: · The written press (dailies,
Sundays, tabloids, newsmagazines, national and local press: The New York
Times, The Washington Post, TIME, Newsweek, etc.) · TV news (CNN, ABC,
NBC…) · The Internet Teaching objectives · To familiarize students with
media communications in the US · To study how news is processed and presented
by different media in different ways and for different reasons
Teaching methods
Students will be given documents to read or watch in class before debates
are opened on presentation, characteristics and politics of the paper
or channel in question · Students will be given subjects or news items
to present in the form of articles or news programs in class · Students
will give a 10-minute presentation on a given newspaper or TV news program
Format
One meeting weekly of 3 hours during 7 weeks.
Course content
Analysis of documents (newspapers, newspaper articles,
newsmagazines, TV programs, and Internet articles) · Comparison of the
way news stories are covered and presented · Study of what characterizes
the American news media and how it differs from the French news media
Individual and group work · Reading the written and Internet press to
broaden their horizons and knowledge of current events in order to be
able to discuss news as presented in the US · An exposé to present in
class
Evaluation
Students will be graded on their exposé and the frequency and quality
of their participation in class debate and class interactive work
Recommended level
This course is designed for students of all levels.
