Presentation
Short stories, essays, poems, songs and extracts of novels and movies
provide a rich backdrop from which to view Americans and their attitudes
toward work. Writers and filmmakers kindly offer us this platform from
which to examine not only business, but social, and personal life as well,
and help us penetrate into the way we think about our place in the lives
of others.
Teaching objectives
To think about and develop your own understanding and personal views on
the topics raised. To improve your English listening, speaking, reading
and writing skills.
Format
One meeting weekly of 3 hours during 7 weeks.
Course content
How does a particular literary work, essay, song or movie illustrate attitudes?
We will examine, among others, the Protestant work ethic, voluntary and
involuntary immigration, the American dream of success, the Great Depression,
white collar and blue collar work , women at work.
Teaching methods
There will be various activities in class requiring speaking, listening,
reading and writing in presenting an analysis, arguments and supporting
rationale and in offering criticism.
Individual work
Active participation in class. Reading inside and outside class. Comments
on an internet forum. Two essays.
Evaluation
Participation and essays.
Recommended level
This course is designed for students of all levels.
