Presentation
A course on Britain's news media covering: The written press (dailies,
Sundays, tabloids, broadsheets/qualities, the national and local press)
TV news (terrestrial and satellite: BBC,ITV,Channel 4, Channel 5 and B
Sky B) Radio (BBC Radio 4)
Teaching objectives
To familiarise students with media communications in the UK To study how
news is processed and presented by different media in different ways and
for different reasons
Format
One meeting weekly of 3 hours during 7 weeks.
Course content
Analysis of documents (newspapers, newspaper articles, news magazines,
TV and radio programmes) Comparison of the way news stories are covered
and presented Study of what characterizes the British news media and how
it differs from the French news media.
Teaching methods
Students will be given documents to read, watch or listen to in class
before opening a debate on presentation and how papers or channels differ
(characteristics and politics of the paper, channel or programme) Students
will be given subjects or news items to present in the form of articles
or news programmes in class Students will give a 10-minute presentation
on a given newspaper or TV/radio news programme
Individual work
Reading the written press and listening to the radio to broaden their
horizons and knowledge of current events in order to be able discuss news
as presented in the UK An exposé to present in class Evaluation Students
will be graded based on their exposé and the quality of their participation
in class debate and class interactive work
