Presentation
Debate can be a means for developing language fluency; it develops speaking
and listening skills. Debate is a competitive activity, but it relies
on teamwork and cooperation. Debate also develops leadership skills; a
good debater must motivate others, state a goal, formulate a plan and
then work to achieve that goal. And finally, debate is fun!
Teaching objectives
To develop the reading, writing, speaking, listening and research skills
demanded by debate.
Format
One weekly meeting of 3 hours.
Course content
You will participate in 3 different debates based on three formats: The
Standard Debate Format The Cross-Examination Debate Format The Lincoln-Douglas
Debate Format While students will be free to choose their topics of debate,
each student should participate in both a policy debate and a value debate.
Teaching methods
Exercises simulating proficiency requirements for debate: Debate and evaluation.
(Some class time will be allotted for research and team meetings.)
Individual work
You will be required to fully research and prepare for your debate. Debates
must be given on the assigned date and must be accompanied by a bibliography
(if necessary for that particular debate).
Evaluation
To receive a passing grade, you must participate in ALL exercises and
debates.
Recommended level
This course is designed for students who need to practice their communication
skills.
