This course will survey English literature written by women from the United
States and the British Commonwealth during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Teaching Objectives
1. To familiarize students with English literature written by women. 2.
To introduce questions concerning images of women, the construction of
a female literary canon, and the role of gender in the creation of poetry
and fiction. 3. To broaden reading skills and sharpen analytical ones.
4. To practice "speaking up" in a classroom environment.
Format:
One weekly of 3 hours during 7 weeks.
Course Content
The course will focus largely on short fiction with occasional poems or
excerpts from longer works. Well-known authors such as Virginia Woolf
or Willa Cather will be presented, as will less familiar ones.
Teaching Methods
All readings are to be completed before class meetings. Class time will
be divided between lectures that introduce various critical approaches
to women’s writing, oral presentations, and discussions with students
about the texts.

Students should count on reading 10-15 pages per week. Class preparation
and participation are mandatory. Required assignments will include an
oral presentation, an in-class written exam, and a typed essay prepared
at home.
Evaluation
Final grades will be based on class participation and writing assignments.

literature.
