Presentation
By reading, participating in class discussions and exercises, giving speeches,
and evaluating other's speeches, you will learn the principles and the
skills of public speaking.
Teaching objectives
To develop an understanding and appreciation of public communication.
To develop skills in speaking through giving and listening to a variety
of speeches.
Format
One meeting weekly of 3 hours during 7 weeks.
Course content
Finding a topic, audience analysis, speech structuring, proper delivery.
Preparation and delivery of speeches to inform/demonstrate, persuasive
speeches, ceremonial speeches, motivation speeches, etc.
Teaching methods
Students will have a handbook and will complete exercises related to the
handbook chapters. There will be 2 individual speeches and 1 group speech
required. Some class time will be allotted to research and preparation
of individual and group speeches. Speeches will be videotaped and evaluated.
Individual work
You will be required to fully research and prepare for your speech. Speeches
must be given on the assigned date and must be accompanied by an outline
and bibliography (if necessary for that particular speech). After the
speech is delivered, you will be required to view the videotape in the
resource center and complete a self-evaluation.
Evaluation
To pass this course you must attend regularly and complete ALL speech
assignments, turn in outlines and do your self-evaluations. You will earn
points for each element.
Recommended level
This course is designed for students who need to practice their communication
skills.
