Session Two -- April 2
Today's assignment involves developing your personal pages by adding meta tags to your homepage (index.html), creating a new web page called april2.html, adding a wide variety of tables to your april2.html page, inserting meta tags on your homepage index.html, learning to insert photos and images into your tables and website, and using hyperlinks on your web pages. See lessons.DETAILS
go to you tripod web page by using build and edit and file manager, and click on index.html and also, march26.html to look at your previous work.
while in file manager, click on free form and then create a new practice page for today called april2.html Write something like Practice Exercises for April 2, centering it, in bold, and in italics at the top. Save and then preview, as usual, what you wrote.
now, go back to your homepage (index.html) and place meta tags in the <head> section, explaining 1) who the author of the page is -- you! 2) what the keywords are. 3) what the description of your page is. You will see that tripod has already provided most of the meta tags for you. Confirm that the html code has changed by going to VIEW, then SOURCE.
using www.w3schools, create a variety of tables (starting with a 2x3 and a 3x2) in their practice frames and then copy (control + c) and paste (control + v) these tables into the <body> of your april2.html practice page. For ease of use, put numbers 1, 2, 3, . . . in all the cells of your table.
using <hr> to separate your table exercises, create even more tables by changing the following parameters: border="", width="", align="", cellpadding="", cellspacing="", bgcolor="", bordercolor="",
Hint: an example of the parameters of one table could be: <table border="1" align="center" cellpadding="10",cellspacing="50", bgcolor="0000ff", bordercolor="ffffff", width="50%">. . . .
using different photo sources such as www.google.com IMAGES, or www.art.com, or www.arttoday.com , www.corbis.com and so on, right click on your mouse (and then use save picture as) to copy these photos and images and then to paste them IN the cells of your tables.
use <img src="myimage.jpeg">
use width and height parameters such as <img src="myimage.jpeg" width="107" height="143" >
tip: do not forget to upload your image to your site at tripod, as well as your changed webpage!
after creating a number of images in your tables, make a new list, either ordered or unordered and call this list my favorite movies. Create at least five hyperlinks to your movie websites. Hint: use <a href="http://www.spiderman.sonypictures.com/>Spiderman</a>.
feel free to use your creativity and add as much html code as you want on your exercise page.
Get reading to make a one minute presentation of your web site at the beginning of session four. This will be a part of your final grade.
do not send me an email about your new site because I can get onto it through our home page!
Session Three -- April 9
In today's assignment, you will work on preparing your personal page for a lightening-fast, one-minute presentation next class, and start your business web site.
For your personal site, first of all, jazz up your homepage (remember: in your file manager this is labeled as index.html or index.htm). Put all the tables, pictures, links, and whatnot on your home page, and make sure that you put links to your march26.html, april2.html, and april9.html practice pages. Your site may not be so elegant, but you should be satisfied with your ability to fill it up with your original and creative html code.
As for your business site, you will reserve a new tripod website.
DETAILS
For your personal site: create a page called april9.html
Put a new table on your april9 page, with at least three columns and three rows.
Use the attributes of rowspan and colspan to modify your table.
Fill the cells in your table with anything that you want: links, ordered lists, unordered lists, photos, icons, drawings. Change cell colors, row colors, borders, cellspacing, cellpadding, center, align right, left etc. Call your table: My Work of Art.
On your homepage -- index.html, write links to all of your practice page. I will change your homepage to index.html and you will use this page to start your quick one-minute presentation for next week in front of our class. Make it something interesting for everyone to see.
For your team business page, do the following:
Go through the process of signing up (ONE person in each group should do this) for free web space once again on tripod
Once you have registered for your new page, go to tripod home, then build and edit
Go to site builder and choose create a new website (note: this time you will not be using raw html code to build your site, but rather a high level web editor
Select small business and type the name of your business. Select at least six pages listed to start your site.
Go to choose design of which there are more than a hundred, and select business designs of which there are several dozen. Choose one which will become the background of all of your business pages. You can change the design later.
After you have finished this first section, go to the navigation bar below and click on publish to web (this will ftp your information to tripod, creating a folder with your company name)
Go to file manager. Click on the new folder which will have your company name. In this folder, you will see the different web pages such as products, location, about us, and so on, but they will be labeled id1.html, id2.html and so on. Change their names to something meaningful such as products.html, aboutus.html etc.
Open up FrontPage, and use FrontPage in your future web site designs if you wish.
ENABLE FrontPage on Tripod before you upload any new files to your site. Go to your site and find the enabler or go to http://www.tripod.lycos.com/guides/frontpage.html and read this new info and then click on YES, DO IT!
Start creating pages for your business site using tripod and FrontPage. Write text. Insert pictures and graphic material, etc.
Experiment with FrontPage, adding items to both your homepage and to your business page.
You will, at the beginning of the April 23 class, present your website to the whole class by clicking on your web address as it is listed on www.businesscourses.com/hec2003/studentpages.htm Your presentation should last ONLY one minute.
Create a personal page called april23 and use FrontPage to create a "pirate" page. Your objective is to avoid REINVENTING THE WHEEL by searching other people's work and BORROWING their ideas: formats, pictures, layouts, etc. Be sure to link, as always, your personal page on your homepage. You may also wish to use FrontPage to create some fancy tables to organize your page. Experiment!
If your group does not have your group photo done yet, do it now! Just ask.As for your business page, start filling it out, and create a multiple language site if your client uses any language other than English. Send your business address to me, and I will put it on our homepage.

For your personal page, create a file called april30 and sometime this week put your CV on this page, using FrontPage and html code that you have learned.
For your business page, do a benchmarking study of businesses similar to the one that you are doing. You will be doing a benchmarking report in front of the class for our final session.
For your personal page, insert jumps by using <a href="#top">Top</a>, <a name="top"> into your CV which is on your april30 page. To see how it is done on this page with Back to Top , click on view, then source, and search for the appropriate html code. If you ever get lost, go to W3Schools! They have the answer for everything!
Also on your CV, if you wish, you may insert many other jumps that go to the various sections of your CV: education, work experience, computer skills, interests, and so on.
In addition, create a page called may7 and, as usual, put a link on your home page that goes directly to may7. Create a small powerpoint presentation and save it. Then, use tripod file manager to upload your powerpoint slides onto your may7 page.
Continue to work on your business site, inserting a powerpoint slide show which will show your benchmarking study that you did on April 30. You will present this powerpoint and benchmarking study in the final presentations, the last day of class May 28.

NB: the power point comes from your web site--not from a local disk.Further comments on what else you would like to add to your business site, etc.Possibly, product samples--you can make the class come alive anyway you wish!
Your final report on your created commercial web site. You should invite a representative of the business that you created the web site for. Keep in mind that the presentation will be in English, and it will be done LIVE on the web. Total time per group about 40 minutes. For this final session, all four groups.
